How to Calculate CGPA: Step-by-Step Guide for Students

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of the grade points you earn across all semesters. Each subject carries a credit value, and your grade in that subject is converted into grade points. The formula is simple: CGPA = sum of (grade points x credits) divided by total credits.

For example, if you scored 9 grade points in a 4-credit subject and 8 grade points in a 3-credit subject, your CGPA is (9x4 + 8x3) / (4+3) = 60/7 = 8.57. Always double-check your arithmetic, or better, use a computer.

To convert CGPA to percentage, most universities use the formula Percentage = CGPA x 9.5. So a CGPA of 8.5 equals roughly 80.75%. Check your university's official conversion rule, since some institutions use different multipliers.

Common mistakes include forgetting to weight by credits, mixing semester GPA with cumulative GPA, and rounding too early. Compute with full precision and round only the final result.
