How to Calculate SGPA and Convert It to CGPA: University Formulas

In university grading systems, tracking your academic performance is essential to maintaining scholarships, meeting graduation requirements, and applying for internships. Academic standing is measured using two primary metrics: SGPA and CGPA. While both represent grade averages, understanding the difference and how to calculate them is key to planning your academic goals.

SGPA, or Semester Grade Point Average, measures your academic performance in a single semester. Unlike a simple average, SGPA is a credit-weighted average. This means that subjects with higher credit values (like core engineering or science courses) have a larger impact on your score than lower-credit electives. To calculate it, you multiply each course's credit by the grade point earned, sum these weighted points, and divide by the total credits of the semester.

CGPA, or Cumulative Grade Point Average, represents your overall academic performance across all completed semesters. A common mistake students make is taking the simple average of their SGPAs. This is incorrect if your semesters contain different total credits. To calculate CGPA accurately, you must sum the weighted grade points from all semesters combined, and divide by the aggregate credit hours taken throughout your degree.

For example, if you earned 180 weighted grade points on 20 credits in Semester 1 (SGPA of 9.0), and 150 weighted points on 18 credits in Semester 2 (SGPA of 8.33), your cumulative score is (180 + 150) divided by (20 + 18) = 330 / 38 = 8.68. Taking a simple average of the SGPAs (9.0 + 8.33) / 2 would yield 8.66, which is incorrect. Credit weighting ensures your overall average is mathematically accurate.

Knowing your current CGPA allows you to predict the grades you need in upcoming semesters to reach a target score. For instance, if you want to graduate with an 8.5 CGPA and have 2 semesters remaining, you can calculate the minimum SGPA required in those terms to offset lower grades from earlier years, helping you prioritize your study hours.
